Budget tips for surviving through January

Here are four tips you can follow to help you keep your budget and expenditure intact until your January payday.

Keeping the budget under control during the holidays is a struggle for families the world over.

More so toward the end of the holiday when the novelty of Christmas and New Year’s has worn off and the prospect of going back to school and work weighs heavy in the household, not to mention the gruelling month that is January.

If you are spending the holidays at home, the luxury of having nothing to do wears off quickly and it’s not long before the kids start getting bored.

Here are four tips you can follow to help you keep your budget and expenditure intact until your January payday:

• Plan ahead
Schedule outings, family visits, and other activities well in advance and stick to your plan at all costs.

• Remove temptation
The temptation to just open the fridge and munch whenever you feel like it is ever-present during the holidays. Keeping to a regular schedule; having breakfast, snacks and lunch at a set time every day is sure to save you money.

• Alternative activities
Rather than an unplanned – and potentially costly – visit to the mall, find innovative ways of keeping everyone busy. This can be helping in the house or the garden, watching a movie or playing a game.

• Back to school
New year means new school clothes, books, stationery and much more. It also means these items are in demand and thus, more expensive. Make sure that these items are planned for and bought as soon as possible. The biggest mistake families make is buying these items at the last minute.
