World Kidney Health Day commemorated

Roodepoort residents were treated to free blood pressure and sugar screenings in commemoration of World Kidney Health Day.

World Kidney Health Day is commemorated annually on the second Thursday of March to raise awareness of kidney disease, associated health problems, and its impact on societies around the world.

DSS Medical, a private health clinic in Roodepoort CBD, hosted a kidney health awareness day on Thursday, March 13 to educate residents about the importance of regular blood pressure and blood sugar testing, since high blood pressure and diabetes are recognised as the leading causes of kidney failure.

According to professional nurse and owner Modise Gunqisa, DSS Renal, a department of the clinic, is seeing more and more cases where undiagnosed existing conditions lead to renal failure, resulting in patients requiring dialysis.

“In many cases, this would have been completely preventable had they been diagnosed in time,” says Modise. “People end up spending three hours, three times per week on dialysis for the rest of their lives, at great expense.”

DSS Medical partnered with Ampath Laboratories on the day to provide free blood pressure and sugar screenings, and information sessions for Roodepoort residents.
