The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) has opened and restored Princess Station, effective from April 1. This development was confirmed by Gauteng Metrorail spokesperson Andiswa Makanda.
The reopening of Princess Railway station is part of a broader initiative to restore and upgrade rail infrastructure in the area, that were closed during the Covid-19 pandemic and over the years became a haven for vagrants.

In recent months, several other stations have been reopened, including Randfontein, Krugersdorp, Luipaardsvlei and additional stop and halt stations like Hamburg, Florida Unified and Bosmont.
According to Makanda, repairs at Princess Station resumed on January 13 and were completed on March 17. The station has now commenced full rail operations, providing commuters with a safer and more reliable travel option.

While the reopening of Princess Railway station is a significant achievement, work is still underway to upgrade other stations in the Roodepoort. Maraisburg Station, for example, is currently 82% complete, with an expected completion date of July 2025.
According to Makanda, other stations like Newclare, Homelake, West Rand, Witpoortjie and Horison are still awaiting budget for 2025/25 financial year.
