Hands that pray also pick up litter – FullFlame

With each clean-up, FullFlame Life Church continues to remind the community of the power of togetherness.

The morning of Saturday, May 10, was nothing short of beautiful. With the sun casting a warm glow over Hendrik Potgieter and Peter roads, volunteers from FullFlame Life Church gathered with bright smiles, strong coffee and a shared purpose.

The event kicked off with a heartfelt prayer, asking for protection, strength and unity. With gloves on and refuse bags in hand, the group got to work – walking along sidewalks, grassy patches, and roadside corners, determined to make a difference.

This clean-up was not a once-off act of goodwill but part of a growing movement led by the church. Since 2023, FullFlame Life Church has hosted clean-ups across the Ruimsig and surrounding areas every six to eight weeks.

On Saturday, the energy was no different. The church was joined by the ever-dedicated Toolbox Hub team, whose members jumped straight into action, cutting overgrown grass on the sidewalks and packing up the litter bags into the van. Officers from the JMPD, initially there to monitor traffic and ensure safety, soon rolled up their sleeves and joined in – collecting litter, pulling weeds, and encouraging volunteers.

Together, the teams tackled discarded plastic, paper, fast food wrappers, and even removed illegal signage. Children and adults worked side by side, their laughter and teamwork turning the cleanup into something joyful. Motorists hooted in support, and a few passersby stopped to offer thanks.

“This isn’t just about keeping the area clean,” said Thato Phiri, community outreach co-ordinator at the church. It’s about being a blessing to the community through action, not just words.”

By late morning, sidewalks looked refreshed, the bags of collected litter were piled high, and the spirit of the day lingered in the air.
