A recent crackdown on illegal structures and unregulated scrapyards has raised awareness of the amount of crime in the area.
According to councillors Elmari Atterbury and Sarah Wissler, residents raised concerns about suspicious activity on May 12 and 13, including the erection of an unapproved structure and multiple scrapyard operations linked to cable theft and stolen vehicles.

JMPD swiftly deployed to the scene with the assistance of Sergeant Sipho Nkosi and Superintendent Mvumu, where several outcomes were achieved, including the dismantling of an illegal wall structure and serving of formal notice to the owners, the closure of the illegal scrapyard operating without permits and under false information, and the discovery of a stolen vehicle.
“We commended the residents of Ward 97 for their vigilance, which played a crucial role in bringing this issue to light. We do, however, encourage residents to continue logging in their calls and communicating with their councillors, local security companies and law enforcement on any suspicious activities. Working together will not only reduce the crime in the area, but it will assist with keeping our community stronger together,” Atterbury said.
