Romance, comedy and festive spirit: Locals reveal top Christmas movie picks

West Rand residents reveal their festive favourites, from heartwarming classics to family-friendly films.

During the festive season, Christmas movies are once again expected to top the charts.

The Randfontein Herald asked West Rand residents what they think makes the perfect Christmas movie.

Chabe Lethoko believes the best recipe for a Christmas classic includes romance, comedy and Christian themes.

For her, a festive movie night means a comfortable seat and a selection of Tyler Perry films, which she enjoys for their comedic relief. She also occasionally watches local productions that highlight the Christmas spirit. For her children, The Grinch is a favourite.

Chabe avoids action movies during Christmas, describing them as too violent for the season.

Tryphina Lekgetho said she does not watch movies, mainly due to limited time. Still, she encourages others to do so, explaining that films can broaden knowledge, especially over the festive period. Her advice is to choose movies that sharpen comprehension and cognition, such as Klaus, an animated film about the origins of Santa Claus.

Another resident, Tracey Stewart, said, “I love a classic Christmas movie. It has to be really soppy and romantic.”

Her all-time favourite is Love Under the Lemon Tree. She would watch it every day if she could, but especially enjoys it at Christmas.

She dislikes movies with violence, describing her anti-Christmas formula as ‘anything children are not allowed to watch’.
