Fruitcake: A festive favourite or flop?
To fruitcake or not to fruitcake? In true West Rand style, residents weighed in on South Africa's hottest debate.
In a bid to settle the most contested festive debate in South African history, West Rand residents took a brave stab at answering the age-old question: Do people like fruitcake?

Hester Fourie stated that a lot of people like fruitcake, however, she ate too much of it when she was a child. Now, she rarely eats it. She would rather bake a classic brownie recipe than a fruitcake. Hester also expressed that she does not like the aftertaste of the cake.

Tanya Naudé contradicted this statement, saying fruitcake is her favourite.
“I eat it whenever I can buy it,” she said.
Friends Louise Williams and Johan Cloete both emphasised how much they love fruitcake.
“It is about the taste and everything that goes with it. It really is satisfying in the mouth,” they both expressed.
However, Jaco Barnard might be the cake’s biggest hater.
“It is disgusting. I want milk tart on Christmas Day. I don’t want dried-out fruits inside the dough. Also, I drink my brandy, I don’t want to eat it,” he said.

Although Jobe Nkosie never tasted fruitcake, it is something he would really like to try someday.

Thabang Sepotokele said his favourite part of the cake is the brandy. He expressed that he likes the taste of it inside the baked goods.
