Turn the post-holiday clean-up into a party

Get the whole family involved and say goodbye to the Christmas chaos with a smile.

Packing up after Christmas isn’t exactly the most exciting part of the holidays. Let’s be honest, you dread the admin of spring cleaning already, now imagine cleaning up decorations and all that leftover food.

Cleaning up doesn’t have to be as depressing. You can turn the dreaded clean-up into a fun family tradition you might even look forward to.

Here are 5 steps to get you started:

1. Make a clean-up playlist

Music is always the best way to lighten up your mood and keep you productive.

2. Assign roles like a game

• Who can take down the most ornaments in 60 seconds?
• Who can wash the dishes the fastest?
• Time each other and beat last year’s record

3. Let the kids lead a task

Give kids age-appropriate responsibilities and let them be the “boss” of their task, whether it’s sorting ornaments by colour, folding wrapping paper, or sweeping the floors. Bonus: it teaches responsibility, too.

4. Turn leftovers into a snack break

Use holiday treats as a reward system. Cookies or cake can be a reward for washing the dishes, or a nice cold beverage to ease off the hard work.

5. Declutter as you go

This is the perfect time to let go of decorations you don’t love, broken items, or excess gift bags. Keep a “donate” box handy and make space for a fresh start.
