SPCA urges responsible pet care this New Year
Festive season strays and abandoned pets put pressure on West Rand shelters – here’s how the SPCA is helping.
The RandWest SPCA has highlighted the challenges faced by animal shelters across the West Rand during the New Year period.
RandWest SPCA manager René van Straten said festive season numbers usually climb, with January being the month when the most animals are handed over or found as strays.
“Our biggest concern is owners going on holiday without making proper arrangements for their animals. Abandoning an animal, even for a few days, is illegal. If we come across such cases, the animal will be removed and a case opened under the Animal Protection Act,” she said.
René urged the public to ensure that anyone caring for their pets is reliable, or to use boarding facilities.
During the New Year, the SPCA will patrol peak hours looking for lost animals. An emergency number will be available 24/7, and outside kennels will allow people to safely drop off lost pets.
“We work with other law enforcement stakeholders, but fireworks are extremely difficult to control. Our focus is on creating awareness and encouraging responsible pet ownership.”
The SPCA hopes its efforts will help reduce animal neglect and abuse during the festive season.
