Voter participation is vital to democracy, says political analyst

Political analyst Dr Levy Ndou urges citizens to participate in the electoral process, saying every vote provides an opportunity for people to have their voices heard and influence who represents them in government.

As South Africans gear up to make electoral decisions from November 1 to 4, political analyst and Tshwane University of Technology lecturer Dr Levy Ndou urges everyone to participate in making a choice for the republic.

According to Ndou, low voter turnout poses challenges to democratic participation by indicating that some citizens are not taking part in determining the direction of society.

Ndou said voter participation is important because voting is a constitutional right that allows citizens to take part in the democratic process.

“Voter participation is very important in the sense that it is derived from our Constitution, and it is a right that every citizen has,” Ndou said.

He said citizens should understand that their participation in elections allows them to influence who represents them in government.

“It’s important for people to understand that their vote counts in the sense that they can bring in a government of their choice,” he said.

Ndou believes elections provide citizens with an opportunity to choose who should lead and represent them.

He emphasised that every vote contributes to the electoral process, regardless of how small the margin may be.
“Every vote counts in an election, whether it is one or less than 10 votes,” Ndou said.

He encouraged citizens to participate so that their views and voices are represented through the democratic process.

“What becomes very, very important is that all people are supposed to participate in the elections so that their voices can also be heard,” he concluded.
