Nic Diederichs Road and Beretta Street traffic light installation pushed to next financial year

An exact date of installation will be available by August at the earliest.

A much-called-for traffic light installation is still in the pipeline.

The section of Nic Diederichs Road where Emily Hobhouse and Beretta Streets meet has been a troubling stretch to navigate for many motorists. Often resembling a scrum of metal and rubber at peak hours, Beretta and Glock Streets residents queue for extended periods as they attempt to leave the only access point of their suburb. Tall grass on the verges reduces visibility, adding an avoidable obstacle to an already dangerous situation.

Traffic signals for the intersection were approved in 2022 and as of August of that year, Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) had stated the installation sat 40th in the queue on their priority list. JRA gave an update in April explaining that they had applied for electricity supply to be provided to the intersection and that budget would be allocated in the coming months.

JRA’s Kelebogile Mafa confirmed, “Once finalised, a new traffic signal will be installed in the next financial year. We will be able to provide an exact date of installation in August 2023.”
