Potholes on JG Strydom damaging vehicles on a regular basis

Two holes between 9th and Batoka Avenues the scene of five incidents in two weeks.

Municipal inaction is creating financial and safety hazards for motorists.

Two large potholes on JG Strydom Road have claimed several victims in the past few weeks. An accident on the evening of May 11 was at least the fifth incident in the space of two weeks. Two people walked away unharmed but their vehicle, like many others, required extensive repairs. The hole closest to Batoka Avenue was the culprit this time but its partners closer to 9th Avenue have left many a tyre shredded.

The holes have been reported to Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) multiple times but wrangling over the road’s maintenance has caused delays. Complications with Rand Water’s F45 pipeline project are the reason for JG Strydom Road’s inconsistent surface and despite multiple site visits and confirmation the issues will be addressed, none have materialised.

Panorama Residents Association attended to all five incidents and was appreciative of the assistance received.

“Thank you to our security partners, EC Security and Beagle Watch Armed Response, for your quick response when we were notified about the accident by one of our residents via our dedicated ’emergency only’ group,” they stated via their Facebook page.

Both Rand Water and JRA were contacted via email for comment but now was forthcoming by the time of publication.
