Church water crisis causes frustration

Following the water shortage in the country, Johannesburg Water has been accused of slacking on its part to combat this issue.

The Full Gospel Church of God in Wilro Park has been flooded with water from an apparent burst pipe for over a month now and while multiple calls have been logged with Johannesburg Water, nothing has been done to date.

This comes after the church caretaker noticed a small leak emerging from the bricks underneath the ground back in October, for which a call was logged, and a reference number was received, but the situation has escalated as the premises are now flooded with water running into the property of a neighbour.

According to Sophia van Deventer, resident, and church committee member, Johannesburg Water has been slacking to which they have responded that the burst pipe in question was logged as a meter-related incident, but they cannot take responsibility as it is the church’s pipe.

It has been understood that there is a water shortage across the country, however, major leaks like this are not being provided with the necessary attention to curb water issues.

Ward 83 councillor Florence Roberts weighed in on the matter and cited that the Johannesburg municipal entities are notoriously delivering poor service.

“This particular issue is a little more complicated as the water pipe runs through the church property and JW has been there but say it the church’s problem as it’s on the private side of the meter and is not a municipal issue,” she said.

Johannesburg Water was unavailable for official comment at the time of this publication, however more details will follow in due course.
