Dug-up road becomes a hazard not only for vehicles but residents’ safety

After an attempted hijacking at Flamingo Villas, a resident now fears for her life.

Residents of Flamingo Villas struggle daily to get in and out of their complex due to the road that is badly damaged and answers seem to allude them.

Sandra van der Westhuizen, a resident stated, “There are 74 units in the complex. How many people are driving in and out of the complex daily? I’ve hit my car on the bottom so many times already.”

She explained the road was dug up in August 2023 when a neighbouring complex put in a power cable and the road has not been repaired. There is also some confusion as to whose responsibility these repairs are. Since it has only gotten worse.

She explained on January 14, as she came home, she was almost a victim of an attempted hijacking. She noticed two suspicious vehicles standing on the side of the road. The drivers of the two vehicles allegedly attempted to box her in in front of the complex’s entrance, but she made it safely inside. She explained incidents such as this can happen easily since motorists have to drive into the complex slowly due to the damaged road. Once the security company of the complex viewed the security footage, they informed her that she was involved in an attempted hijacking.

“We have to go in slowly so as not to damage our cars, making it perfect for hijacking. What happens when I have to work late? My life is in danger!”

On January 17 the damaged road was covered with sand to make it somewhat safer for cars to drive on, however, it can still cause damage. She noted the complex has two entrances, neither of which can be used due to the damaged road.

The Johannesburg Road Agency has not commented at the time of publishing, as soon as comment is received an update will be given.

Attempts have also been been made to contact the neighbouring complex’s body corporate and as soon as a response is received an update will be published.
