Multiple electricity outages in Roodepoort suburbs

City Power is scrambling to repair three major electricity outages that are affecting the majority of the Roodepoort region.

The majority of the Roodepoort region is without electricity today, April 12 as City Power’s Roodepoort Service Delivery Centre (SDC) deals with multiple outages across a wide area.

According to City Power spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, most of the outages in the region are due to three main power supply interruptions, the first being at the Kloofendal and Christiaan de Wet substations, which was caused by a tree that was cut down.

The falling tree snapped two overhead power lines as it was felled.

“This outage is widespread because both these substations feed electricity to other substations, such as the Peter Road, Wilropark, Wilgeheuwel, and Boothills substations,” says Mangena.

The affected areas include Horison, Horison View, Florida Park, Georginia, Roodekrans, Wilropark, Helderkruin, Constantia Kloof, Kloofendal, Weltevreden Park, Wilgeheuwel, Strubens Valley, Ruimsig, Eagle Canyon, Honeydew, and surrounding areas.

According to Mangena, repairs are underway, but as of now, there is no indication as to how long it will take.
The second significant electricity outage emanates from the Penny Street Substation in Witpoortjie.

Mangena did not disclose a cause for this outage but said that it affects residents of Witpoortjie and Grobler Park.

“Operators are on site working to resolve the outage,” he says.

The third outage emanated from the fire at the JG Strydom Switching Station in Weltevreden Park yesterday.

“Four cables were damaged following a flash on the Ring Main Unit (RMU) yesterday,” says Mangena, adding that the damage caused is extensive, requiring the dismantlement of the unit.

“This has been successfully done and the team has commenced with the replacement process of both the RMU and cables.”

Mangena has apologised for the inconvenience, saying that the entity is out in force to try and bring an end to the outages.

“We understand the frustration caused by these outages and we are updating customers on all our platforms as information becomes available from the teams on the ground.

“We appeal for patience and understanding as our teams work on restoring supply in all affected areas.”
