City Parks embarks on mega clearing project

City Parks tackled overdue grass cutting, verge maintenance and tree pruning.

Workers and contractors from Johannesburg City Parks and Zoos (JCPZ) descended on Florida en masse on February 6 as part of their Region C Megablitz programme aimed at addressing rampant overgrowth in parks, cemeteries and verges.

This follows widespread complaints from residents and community organisations during December and January regarding the dire condition of open areas and verges throughout Florida and Roodepoort.

The programme got underway early morning with workers being deployed at various streets throughout Florida, including the notorious Rail, Ruth and Lockies streets which run alongside the railway tracks.

In addition to cutting overgrowth in parks and verges, teams of horticulturists made short work of dangerous overhanging tree limbs along the streets.

According to Florida South Residents Association chairperson Rodney Churchyard, the programme came at a time when residents were completely fed up with the overgrowth that was becoming out of control.

“We keep urging residents to help us keep our neighbourhoods clean, but it becomes an impossible task if the entities charged with keeping verges and parks clean do not do their part.

“We are very pleased that JCPZ took our complaints to heart and deployed significant manpower and machinery to help restore our neighbourhoods.”
