No answers from Johannesburg Water

Johannesburg Water remains mum on low water pressure concerns in Florida Park

Florida Park — Residents residing in Somerset and Van der Stel streets in Florida Park are no closer to getting answers about their spotty water pressure, despite numerous calls logged, and visits by Johannesburg Water (JW) technicians and even the entity’s Hamberg depot manager himself.

According to Christa Mans, water pressure to houses in both streets drops significantly from about 07:00.

Christa Mans: “We have had Johannesburg Water here numerous times and we get a different story each time. We need clarification about what the problem is and how and when the entity plans to address it.”

“There has been a little improvement, with pressure slowly starting to get back to normal from around 15:00,” she says.

“Unfortunately, despite numerous calls logged and even inspections carried out by Johannesburg Water, we still do not have adequate water supply during the day.”

Mans adds that some residents have gone as far as installing their own water tanks, and even boreholes.

“These measures come at immense cost, which not everyone can afford. Besides, we pay for our water. Why should we be forced to go to such lengths?”

Another resident, Gary Berndt, says the low water pressure is causing huge inconvenience for residents of the area.

“The water pressure during the day is so low, that one cannot run a washing machine. Most people have taken to doing their washing at night when the pressure is a little better.”

The Roodepoort Record also spoke to Peter Purdon, an avid runner, who says just taking a shower after his morning run has become impossible.

Peter Purdon: “I cannot tell you how many times I’ve come back from my morning run and am unable to take a shower because of the low water pressure. It seems like Johannesburg Water is not taking our concerns seriously.”

Despite questions sent on numerous occasions to Johannesburg Water’s communication officer Nolwazi Dhlamini over the past months, the Record has thus far been unable to secure a straight answer from the entity as to what the problem is.

Mans says that JW staff had told them that a pump that was supplying water to the area due to it being high-lying was out of service, but they have received no communication as to what the solution to this is.
