Greenbelt submerged after pipe burst

Even though the issue has been resolved, residents still question why their enquiries get ignored until the media steps in.

A large water leak that turned part of the Madeliefie greenbelt into a dam-like pool has been quietly fixed, but Joburg Water (JW) has failed to respond to media queries or officially confirm the repair.

The leak, which residents reported on Tuesday, July 1, saw water pouring from what appeared to be an open or damaged pipe. The gushing water flooded a section of the veld, forming a large pool that alarmed residents and raised concerns about infrastructure and water wastage.

Messages circulating on the local community group suggested the leak may have been linked to an exposed pipe damaged by frequent veld fires in the area. The Roodepoort Northsider visited the site on July 2, after receiving complaints from residents. However, according to Neville Burnett from the RiverWel Residents Association, the leak was supposedly fixed the following day, without any communication from JW.

Despite queries sent to Joburg Water by the journalist, no response was received. The utility has neither issued a statement nor acknowledged the cause of the leak nor confirmed that repairs are being done. At the time of publication, JW has still not responded to emails or provided any public communication regarding the incident.
