Hendrik Potgieter to close for G20 Summit

Your Saturday travel plans may take a detour. Here's what you need to know.

Hendrik Potgieter Road will be temporarily closed this Saturday, November 15, from 09:00 to 13:00 as part of a co-ordinated traffic operation ahead of the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg.

Residents travelling around the area are urged to plan their travels accordingly to avoid delays and disturbances.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), together with the Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP), Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), and police, will carry out rolling road closures, lane restrictions, and traffic control measures across several key routes in the city.

According to the advisory, the affected roads include major highways such as the N1, M1, and N12, as well as urban routes including Rivonia Road, Oxford Road, Jan Smuts Avenue, Winnie Mandela Drive, and Hendrik Potgieter Road. These measures aim to enhance safety and manage congestion during the high-security period leading up to the summit.

Motorists in Roodepoort are advised to use Beyers Naudé Drive, Christiaan De Wet Road, or Ontdekkers Road as alternative routes. If you are travelling to Sandton, Rosebank, and Parktown, you can use Corlett Drive, Sandton Drive, or 11th Avenue, while those in southern Johannesburg are encouraged to travel via Chris Hani Road, Soweto Highway, or Main Reef Road.

Officials have stated that traffic officers and clear signage will be in place to assist motorists and that emergency and essential services will have continued access throughout the operation. Road users are urged to plan, allow extra travel time, and remain patient during the temporary disruptions.

The RTMC noted that the joint traffic operation forms part of a broader initiative to enforce road safety, conduct vehicle inspections, and manage congestion ahead of the G20 Summit.
