Glover Road bridge continues to crumble

The partial collapse of the bridge has exposed long-standing infrastructure failures.

The bridge on Glover Road has partially collapsed, worsening long-standing safety and infrastructure concerns for residents in the area.

This comes after multiple videos and pictures were shared on community WhatsApp groups after a section of the bridge structure had caved in, damaging a stormwater pipe underneath and causing leakage, while the road continues to erode, particularly on the left lane near the bridge.

Despite the risk, vehicles still travel along Glover Road, which has been in a deteriorating condition for years. The Roodepoort Northsider reported that the road was initially set to be tarred in 2017, but the project was never completed, leaving the surface to degrade under constant traffic and weather damage. Since then, residents have taken it upon themselves to maintain the road, often at their own expense.

Resident Kerryn Maher describes that Glover Road, being a dirt road, is extremely busy, and the structure of the road simply cannot handle the quantity of traffic it usually gets. She further adds that almost every year, she personally has to hire a grader as well as a filler to repair their section of the road to make it easier for residents to drive freely.

The partial bridge collapse now raises serious questions about the safety of motorists and the integrity of surrounding infrastructure, especially with continued traffic on a weakened structure.

The Northsider has sent questions to the Johannesburg Roads Agency for comment, and a follow-up article will be published as soon as a response is received.
