CP to install power line to alleviate outages, mainly in Eagle Canyon
City Power plans to install a new 1.2km overhead power line in Eagle Canyon Golf Estate.
Residents of Eagle Canyon Golf Estate will benefit from improved electricity supply stability after a scheduled infrastructure upgrade by City Power (CP).
Eagle Canyon general manager Shaun Mills scheduled a meeting with CP’s planned maintenance manager David Makoni, and Ward 97 Clr Jaquess Hoon to discuss the new powerline implementation.
According to Hoon, Eagle Canyon experienced repeated and prolonged power outages, primarily caused by theft, vandalism and technical failures linked to an ageing underground cable supplied by the Christiaan de Wet Substation.
“The cable has been repaired and rejoined numerous times over the years, rendering it increasingly unreliable and vulnerable to faults and criminal activity,” he said.
CP is expected to install a new 1.2km double overhead power line from the Christiaan de Wet Substation to Eagle Canyon. The project is expected to be completed within the next month.
The overhead line implementation project is expected to reduce the frequency of unplanned outages and improve overall reliability for residents.
Hoon welcomed the intervention, noting that the challenges faced by Eagle Canyon residents have been raised repeatedly with the entity.
“I have consistently engaged CP on behalf of Eagle Canyon residents and pushed for a permanent engineering solution,” said Hoon.
“I welcome CP’s decision to proceed with this project and thank them for prioritising and funding this critical work, particularly in light of the severe financial constraints the entity continues to face,” he added.
While the project will bring relief to Eagle Canyon, other areas within Ward 97 remain affected by infrastructure-related electricity outages. Hoon urges residents to assist in protecting key electrical infrastructure, including mini substations and overhead lines, by reporting vandalism, theft or suspicious activity to the relevant authorities.
“Protecting existing assets is essential while we continue to pursue longer-term solutions for other communities experiencing similar challenges,” Hoon concluded.
