St Stithians tennis star gains international experience in England
A Grade 11 learner showcased his talent on the international stage, returning home with valuable experience and unforgettable memories.
Grade 11 St Stithians Boys learner Connor Miller represented the South African Schools tennis team during the mid-term break, gaining valuable international experience against some of the United Kingdom’s top young players.
Connor was among a select group of school players chosen to represent South Africa and received his national colours before the team departed for London. During the tour, the squad competed against players from two tennis academies, testing their skills in unfamiliar conditions.
According to Connor’s mother, Marion, he enjoyed a successful campaign on the hard courts, winning all of his matches on that surface. He also competed on clay for the first time in his career, narrowly losing his match.
“There was a steep learning curve to playing on clay, but I really enjoyed the experience,” Connor said.

The team also spent two days at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club during the Wimbledon Championships, where they watched some of the world’s leading players practise and compete.
Connor said seeing the professionals up close gave him valuable insight into the game.
“The whole experience is one that I will never forget. Spending time with the SA Schools team, filled with talented players testing themselves against overseas competition, was such an honour,” he said.
Reflecting on the tour, Connor thanked Tennis South Africa, SA Schools Tennis, SA Schools Tennis chairperson David Jaquire, his parents and his coaches for their support and for helping make the opportunity possible.
He said the experience of competing against international opponents, playing on different surfaces and visiting one of tennis’s most iconic venues had given him valuable lessons that he hopes will help take his game to the next level.
