Area outage due to suspected cable fault

The entity claims the outage is caused by a cable fault at Kloofendal, though the Record has received conflicting reports of cable theft and an explosion.

City Power has issued a statement saying the widespread electricity outage affecting the greater Roodepoort region from Florida all the way to Honeydew, is suspected to be due to a 88kV overhead cable fault at Kloofendal.

The power outage is affecting Sentraal, Roodetown, Kloofendal, Weltevreden Park, Lindhaven, Christiaan de Wet, and Peter Road substations. According to the entity, operators are currently on site working to restore the electricity. Eskom is expected to switch electricity on as soon as it it safe to do so.

The Record, in the meanwhile, has received unconfirmed reports of an explosion at the switching station at Westgate, as well as about an alleged cable theft incident at an electricity pile-on in the south of Roodepoort CBD. During a visit to the switching station at Westgate, it was clear there is something going on, with a lot of activity by staff on site, but there are no visible signs that there may have been an explosion.

The Record has sent questions to the entity and will publish their response once received.
