Residents’ repeated attempts to have large potholes repaired on Althea and Sandpeer streets have seemingly gone nowhere, with complaints allegedly being closed despite the road remaining damaged.

Resident Andrew McNair, who uses the roads daily, said he has accumulated numerous reference numbers after reporting the potholes to the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).

McNair said the JRA has previously requested photographs of the damage, but he claims the reports are eventually closed without the problem being resolved.

“I have so many reference numbers from the time when I reported the potholes. I was even requested to send pictures of the potholes, but nothing has happened yet; the tickets just get closed, and we have to log a new one again,” he said.

He said repair work was carried out on Wednesday, August 19, but the largest potholes remained.

The repeated patching has also frustrated McNair, who believes sections of the road require more extensive rehabilitation rather than temporary repairs.

The Northsider contacted the JRA at 10.33 on Thursday, August 20, seeking answers about the outstanding reports, the status of the affected roads and the recent repair work.

The agency was also asked whether longer-term rehabilitation or resurfacing had been considered and whether resource or budget constraints were affecting repairs.

The JRA was given until noon on Monday, August 24, to respond.

At the time of publication, no response had been received. A follow-up email was subsequently sent to the JRA, and its response will be published once received.
