Two multi disciplinary operations yield positive results for Honeydew police

Among crime prevention successes, the investigating officer was commended for assisting in securing conviction of two men for cable theft.

Honeydew police have been on a proactive quest to stamp out the root causes of criminal activity.

Two operations on consecutive Fridays yielded positive results, the first being a district multi-disciplinary operation held on Friday September 30 from 18:00 to the early hours of the next morning. Spreading resources across all four policing precincts, police focused on alcohol related crimes at liquor establishments and through strategic vehicle checkpoints.

A roadblock was conducted at the the corner of Russia Avenue and South Africa Drive in Cosmo City. Fifty-eight vehicles were searched and a total of 117 motorists and passengers, resulting in multiple arrests. Nine people were arrested for drunk driving while one man was arrested in relation to a common domestic violence charge. Compliance inspections were done at several liquor establishments and of the 10 visited, four were given warnings while two were given fines totaling R4 500.

The following week, Honeydew police cracked down on illegal liquor traders with another crime prevention operation. From midday on Friday October 7, police visited several establishments and points of interest that act as tinder for the weekend’s criminal fires. Two vehicle checkpoints were staged and police inspected nine shopping centres, 15 petrol stations, two taxi ranks and three key hot spots.

When the dust had settled, nine premises selling liquor had been closed and 10 people had been arrested. In total, a fraction over 469 liters of alcohol valued at R19 755 was confiscated from eight people who were arrested for selling liquor without a licence. Additionally, another 187 litres of various types of bottled alcohol valued at R6 400 was found abandoned after the suspect allegedly fled the scene.

The two remaining arrests were carried out at roadblocks, where police searched 68 vehicles and 112 individuals, and the searching of hotspots. Two men were arrested for being in possession of items relating to vehicle theft, which included a 16-channel signal jammer device, console bypass keys, Toyota computer boxes, master vehicle keys and various household tools.

In the week between the operations, Honeydew police were happy to announce the successful conviction of two cable thieves. The station wished to commend investigating officer, Warrant Officer Matshaba, who assisted in securing the conviction of two South African nationals charged with tampering with essentials infrastructure and possession of suspected stolen copper cables. Both men were found guilty and were each sentenced to 14 years direct imprisonment.
