Roodepoort councillors demand immediate crime prevention

“We deserve a police service that works with pride to assist our people to feel safe in their own homes and in their communities.”

While crime in the West Rand continues to tighten its grip on the community and threaten social order, numerous ward councillors in the Roodepoort area have come together to draw up a petition in their efforts to save the little collaboration and trust that is left in the communities they serve.

According to the councillors, Roodepoort needs urgent crime prevention as the area has seen an increase in crime and crime related activities.

The councillors who have been pushing the petition are Zoné Hughes, Caleb Finn, Florence Roberts, Johannes Goosen, Chana Ahmed and Rene Benjamin.

They say that across the board, residents are experiencing some form of criminal activity in their area and people no longer feel safe in their own homes.

The councillors also feel that the police is no longer in a position to keep their communities safe.

“We deserve a police service that works with pride to assist our people to feel safe in their own homes and in their communities,” said Ward 85 Councillor Zoné Hughes.

Hughes and Ward 70 Councillor Caleb Finn did an oversight visit at Florida Police Station in August as part of their attempts to raise awareness on the issue of crime in the area.

According to the councillors, this petition wishes to voice the concerns of the community residing within the Florida, Roodepoort, Honeydew and Sophiatown policing areas.

“As concerned citizens, we wish to call upon the Gauteng MEC to ask the Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Honourable Faith Mazibuko and the SAPS Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela to urgently address the issues surrounding the lack of crime prevention in our areas,” said Finn.

Residents are urged by the councillors to sign the petition asking for urgent crime prevention.

“We as residents deserve to feel safe within our communities and in our homes,” added Hughes.

As per the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), the councillors said that they are committed to protecting the privacy of residents and will ensure that their personal information is used appropriately, transparently, and according to applicable law.
