On Wednesday, 9 November members from the Roodepoort Police together with their counterparts from other law enforcement agencies conducted disruptive operations in the Roodepoort policing precinct.

Lead by Station Commander Brigadier Irene Sekwakwa, the operation marked the kick off of the safer festive season operations which is one of many more to come.

According to Roodepoort Police Communication Officer, Captain Juanita Yorke numerous arrests have already been made and there will be a zero-tolerance approach to any crimes in the policing area.

Yorke said that Illicit mining is being addressed and various items have already been seized and are busy being brought to the police for further processing and handling.

Social Crime Prevention and Corporate Communication members along with pastors prayed for the members as well as the members of the community before the parade kicked off.

The team visited various taxi ranks and spoke about commuter safety among other issues.

On the day a total of 16 shopping complexes and schools in the area were also visited.

During the last week Sekwakwa, together with her team, paid a visit to Vivo Informal Settlement and Ingidi Hostel and handed out whistles to the community members and spoke about safety.

Yorke told the Record that various units and patrollers have also been deployed to the hotspots in the policing precinct.

Members of the public are urged to continue reporting criminal activities to Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or by downloading the MySAPS app on any Android or SmartPhone device.

In the case of an emergency, the community is advised to contact 10111 or 112 and obtain the information reference number for their call.

Residents are reminded to try and remain calm and remember to give the call taker your details and correct address as well as the crime you are reporting as this will assist the emergency services to get to you.

“As the festive season begins let us remember to obey the rules of the road and not to drink and drive as this could lead to serious fatalities on the road. Respect other road users and pedestrians, make sure you secure your valuables correctly and park your vehicles safely. Stay alert when leaving or returning to your residence or place of work and when visiting malls and shopping centres take safety precautions when you go to the ATMs and banks. Do not accept any assistance from strangers, safety starts with you, let us be vigilant and work together. I wish the community of Roodepoort, a wonderful, safe and blessed festive season,” said Sekwakwa.
