Holes in Panorama Cemetery fence causes grief and anxiety for residents of neighbouring properties

A truck crashed through a fence several years ago and JCPZ is determining the feasibility of replacing the fence.

Open fields, whether either barren or containing precious memorials, require constant guarding.

Several years ago a truck crashed through the perimeter palisade fence of the Panorama Cemetery and over the short few years vandals have helped to widen the gap. Now as good as non-existent, the cemetery and surrounding properties are at the mercy of anyone who cares to wander through the gaping holes of the barrier fence.

The cemetery borders several residential estates and residents are increasingly anxious about the growing crime allegedly emanating from the place of permanent rest. Resident Charlene Le Roux notes that several homes have been broken into and thefts from backyards have increased.

“They enter at the cemetery and cross over the boundary wall between our estate and the cemetery. Homes have been broken into and much damage and loss has occurred,” relayed Charlene.

As well as added security, her suggestion would be a concrete fence similar to the ones used as barriers near train lines.

“The concrete palisade that I see has been put up in areas around us. This will assist in the closing of not only the cemetery but also assist in crime prevention of our estate as intruders have been found to sleep in the cemetery and also vandalise the graves.”

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo spokesperson, Jenny Moodley, responded to queries about the fence and an alternative, saying, “JCPZ will investigate and advise on the feasibility to replace stolen fencing. In the interim, please be advised that we have found that various types of fencing including concrete, metal and clear view fences are prone to theft. Residents are urged to report any suspicious activity in parks and cemeteries to the local police station or to JMPD on 011 375 5911”.
