Roodepoort detectives secure successful convictions

The court heard that the victim was forced to retire from her job as a teacher as a result of the injuries she sustained during the robbery.

Two dedicated detectives from the Roodepoort Police Station were recently lauded for obtaining lengthy convictions.

According to the station’s spokesperson Captain Juanita-Anne Yorke, Sergeant James Mabusela, and Sergeant Thokozani Mposula worked diligently to secure arrests and also ensure that the perpetrators remain behind bars.

The first case dates back to a house robbery that happened in Wilro Park in August 2019 when a suspect entered a house and found a woman and a child inside.

The suspect assaulted the woman before he made off with contents of the house.
After 32-year-old Tebogo Lucky Khubeka Hlathswayo was positively linked to the scene through the Automated Fingerprints Identification System (AFIS), he was then arrested in March 2022.

He was convicted for house breaking with intent to rob and sentenced to five years, he was also convicted for robbery with aggravating circumstances and received 15 years.

The court heard that the victim was forced to retire from her job as a teacher as a result of the injuries she sustained during the robbery.

Mabusela said that he was happy that he managed to get justice for the victims and hopes that they recover from the trauma that they were subjected to in the hands of criminals.

The other incident happened earlier this year in the Roodepoort CBD when the police got a tip from a community member that there are suspects in a manhole busy cutting copper cables.

On arrival the police arrested six suspects who were taken to prison and one of them died in prison from natural causes.

David Ndebele, 22, and Brighton Ndlovu, 23, were sentenced in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on two counts tempering, damaging, destroying of essential infrastructure.

“We need to get the public involved and get them to report criminals that are operating in the area,” said Mposula.

The last case happened in June 2020 during lockdown when two women were released on bail after they were arrested for shoplifting.

The two were on the run since 2020 and one of them was successfully traced and arrested in Johannesburg while the other suspect is believed to be out of the country.

Annabella Pale, 41, was sentenced in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court to three years direct imprisonment on November 16.
