CoJ officials explained, “Golden Lanes Training & Consulting Services, funded by the Mining Qualifications Authority, provides a short skills program where at least 100 beneficiaries were trained to become future farmers. All 100 beneficiaries were selected from Region C SMMEs in Roodepoort from the mining areas such as BraamFisher, Solplatjie, and Matholesville. The program is aimed at up-skilling community members with Agricultural Plant Production and Business Skills Training to assist those that have existing co-operatives to scale up and be functional, and those without co-operatives to consider registering new ones or consider doing Agricultures as a business.”

Further, they hoped to address unemployment by teaching the people of the region agricultural skills to start their vegetable gardens and the aim of the market day was for beneficiaries to showcase the skills they acquired in three months. They were tasked with buying and sourcing their own products, logistics, customer engagement, and marketing their products, explained Omphile Modise-Mashishi from Golden Lanes Training and Consulting Service.
The available products included fruits and vegetables, seedlings, and herbs.
Patson Khosa, from the CoJ Department of Economic Development, stated, “Some of the aspects of growing the economy are job creation and enterprise development which better position the City in attracting investors and consumers.
“Once the youth register on the City’s database through Isiqalo opportunity Centre situated in the regional offices at Civic Centre, Florida North, Roodepoort it will be easier to get access to information on the programs provided by the City and different partners,” said one of the recipients Mohale Lesiea.
