Roodepoort Transport Master Plan approved

The council has approved the Roodepoort Transport Master Plan and seeks to position and reactivate Roodepoort as a key node.

The Roodepoort Transport Master Plan (TMP) was approved on May 23.

Kenneth Nxumalo from the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) said, “The JDA, on behalf of the City of Johannesburg’s Transport Department, undertook the Roodepoort CBD TMP to improve accessibility and mobility while enhancing the Roodepoort CBD. The main objective of the master plan is to strategically guide investment by the public and private sectors in transport system improvements over the next ten years to unlock other opportunities in the Roodepoort CBD.”

The project further aims to meet the demand for transport within the area, sustainably, as well as investigate the most appropriate ways of transport. The development also hopes for ‘controlled parking and pedestrian-friendly routes along busy streets such as Van Wyk and Albertina Sisulu’, which all form part of the City’s Complete Streets Vision.

“The JDA appointed GIBB and Lemon Pebble as the Urban Design Specialists on the project. The stakeholder engagement meetings took place to obtain input from all people affected [residents, businesses, pedestrians, informal traders, public transport passengers, and service providers] by the project [both internal and external stakeholders] to have a collaborative development of the TMP,” stated Nxumalo.

“The Roodepoort TMP seeks to position and reactivate Roodepoort as a key node. It forms part of the Spatial Development Framework (SDF) 2040’s priority transformation areas and aligns with the JDA’s objective to support the growth and economic nodes into high-quality, investor-friendly and sustainable urban environments. The TMP will provide an efficient and effective transport system to integrate land use and public transport plans. The full participation of the Roodepoort CBD community and stakeholders will be crucial to its implementation and the success of its outcomes,” concluded JDA CEO Mokgema Mongane.
