Plot holes of potholes a concerning reality

Veronica Street is a continuous danger for motorists.

Among the many streets riddled with potholes, Veronica Street takes precedence.

Resident Roland Cundill explained it is clear the street has been patched up numerous times, however, there are still potholes.

According to Cundill, he has been in contact with the ward councillors for years, however, the road is still dangerous. To make matters worse, there was a storm in 2022, which made the road surface worse than it was before. He explained the effects of the storm ‘is symptomatic of the condition of the roads’.

During load-shedding, the road becomes an even bigger concern, said Cundill, as motorists use it as a shortcut to avoid the main street (Christiaan de Wet Road).

With one side of the road full of potholes, motorists have to drive onto the other side, which is a threat to approaching cars, and with heavy traffic, this becomes a major concern. Not to mention the steep hill the road is built on, he explains many cars come speeding down, which would it make it impossible for them to stop in time for an approaching car.

He added the surrounding streets get repaired, some regularly, however, Veronica Street remains a threat to motorists.

Ward 85 councillor Zoné Hughes explains Veronica Street has been a cause for concern for several years and has been brought to the Johannesburg Road Agency’s (JRA) attention but without results.

“During the March Council sitting I tabled a question to the executive on the state of the roads in Roodepoort which also included Veronica Street. The response received was simply that the roads require deep patching and that JRA does not have a major plant relevant to the activity due to contractual or payment issues. I have asked for another update on the matter from JRA but to date, no response has been received. I will continue to press the matter,” said Hughes.

Bertha Peters-Scheepers from JRA stated, “The JRA has a reference number 5259394 for the repairs to potholes on Veronica Street in Kloofendal. We thank the community for escalating this service request. The regional depot has confirmed repairs will be completed by the end of June.”
