Speed cameras along Hendrik Potgieter road not a concern if you abide by the speed limit says JMPD

"Please note that cameras are set up in places where there is either a high number of accidents or road fatalities due to speeding or from complaints of speeding vehicles received from residents themselves and this is done to maintain road safety in that particular area."

Residents who make use of Hendrik Potgieter Road to get to and from work have noticed hidden speeding cameras along the road.

The Roodepoort Northsider spoke to JMPD’s spokesperson Xolani Fihla about the cameras.

He explained that the cameras shown in the pictures submitted to the Roodepoort Northsider are cameras used for speed enforcement.

“Speeding cameras are placed in a manner that should not obstruct or impede vehicle or pedestrian traffic, but they are not meant to be hidden. In this case, if they were able to take pictures of the cameras it means that they are visible,” Fihla said, elaborating, “As a motorist, if you adhere to the speed limits, you’ll be safe regardless of speeding cameras or not.”

Fihla went on to explain that there are three kinds of ways of enforcing speeding, and this is by using automatic cameras which are mostly used on highways, fixed speed cameras that are mounted at specified locations on urban and national roads, and manual cameras are used for high-speed enforcement where speeding motorists are arrested for driving at excessive speeds, 30km/h over the set speed limit in a residential area and 40km/h over the set speed limit on the highway.

“Please note that cameras are set up in places where there is either a high number of accidents or road fatalities due to speeding or from complaints of speeding vehicles received from residents themselves and this is done to maintain road safety in that particular area,” Fihla concluded.

Residents are encouraged to report any illegal or concerning activities to 011 758 9101 or email AngieM@joburg.org.za or M.J.S@joburg.org.za.
