Local daycare centre fosters reading from an early age

A local daycare centre hosted a readathon day to encourage literacy among learners from an early age.

Sakithemba Day Care Centre hosted a readathon day at Davidsonville Recreation Centre as part of its literacy programme.

The theme of the programme was to encourage reading among children to foster a culture of reading for entertainment and enjoyment and learning literacy.

According to the centre’s principal Melody Radebe, the readathon aimed to develop learners’ skills and experience at an early age as they ‘see that most children are struggling to read at schools.’

“As we have a library in our school, we requested parents of our children to come and borrow those novels to read and bring it back so that it will also motivate children to be familiar with books,” she said.
