WATCH: Supermarket celebrates after juicy boerewors roll proposal

Love will always win: man proposes at Pick 'n Pay.

A man from Durban Deep has proposed to his girlfriend of three years in the aisles of Pick ‘n Pay in Flora Centre while she was grilling a boerewors roll for a customer.

On the day of the engagement, deli assistant Kemi Mokgothu had no idea of the proposal and thought it would be just another normal day at work. Her boyfriend, Paul Motswi, showed up unexpectedly with flowers and an engagement ring.

In a bid to keep the engagement a surprise, two of Kemi’s colleagues were in on Paul’s plan and sent her to the front of the store around noon, claiming she was needed to make a boerewors roll for a customer.

One of Kemi’s colleagues, who is known as @theeyummymummy on TikTok, captured the special moment and posted it. Within a few hours, it went viral, with more than 39 000 views.

“That morning [of the proposal], Paul put on a suit. I asked him why he was dressed so nicely, and he said his workplace had told him to dress up, and he wanted to look nice,” she said.

“We had discussed getting married, and I knew he was saving for the lobola payment, but I knew nothing of a ring,” she added.

According to Paul, he wanted to propose to his one-of-a-kind girlfriend at her workplace to show her colleagues and the rest of the world that she is one in a million.

The pair, both 43, met three years ago on a staff bus, but they became official in December 2021 when they threw their bus driver an appreciation party.

“She is a humble person, and we understand each other. When I was asking her out, she gave me a hard time at first, but when she gave me her number, we started chatting. If I can talk about our love, I can talk the whole day. I really love her,” he said.

In support of the couple, who shared their love in the middle of the Pick n Pay store, the retailer surprised them with an engagement cake, a R1 500 wedding cake voucher, and a R10 000 gift card for catering for their big day.

There was jubilation and dancing as the bride-to-be joined her fiancé at the front of the store, where the store manager, Tsietsi Matsimela, surprised the couple with a giant cake with the word celebration on it. He congratulated the couple and handed over a box containing the surprise gifts and a message. The delighted couple were overjoyed as their colleagues, friends, and even shop workers from neighbouring stores joined in the celebration when the cake was sliced.

The couple is planning to tie the knot in December in Limpopo and Zeerust, but following traditional customs, the couple will discuss their plans with family on both sides.
