New milestone as Prasa reopens Roodepoort station

Gauteng commuters cheer Prasa’s long-awaited reopening of Roodepoort station.

The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) is pleased to inform the public of the successful restoration of the Roodepoort Station that started operating on May 28.

After years of commuters struggling to find effective and money-saving transport, Prasa made its commuters smile with the reopening of the Roodepoort Station, adding a services network to the Florida to Johannesburg route that was recovered in March.

Earlier this year, Prasa also recovered four routes in four provinces, including Johannesburg to Nancefield (Gauteng); Cape Town to Stellenbosch (Western Cape); Merebank to Chatsglen (KZN) and Germiston to Elsburg (Gauteng).

Asanda Makanda told the Roodepoort Record that the recovery of these lines and stations has been made possible by dedicated staff across various regions, who have spared no effort and commitment in reaching these achievements, despite facing considerable challenges.

“Prasa remains steadfast in its mission to restore passenger rail as the backbone of public transport in South Africa. Gauteng Metrorail is unwavering in its commitment to providing improved train services to the commuting public, demonstrating dedication to allowing communities to access economic opportunities using affordable train services,” she said.

The agency advises all commuters to familiarise themselves with the new timetable and conditions of carriage of the new service.

The Gauteng Metrorail is still monitoring repairs at other stations in the province and their plans indicate that more stations will be operational within the current financial year. The actual resumption date will be confirmed closer to the time.
