Community unites to combat cable theft
Honeydew community collaborates with private security companies to reduce cable theft in the area.
The Honeydew and Wilgespruit community has taken a stand against cable theft, a persistent problem that has plagued the area for too long.
By combining their mission to ensure safety in the community, the Power Rangers, residents, and business owners have formed a formidable team to combat this issue.
This group of dedicated residents conduct nightly patrols in conjunction with private security companies such as Fidelity Security Group, Absolute Security, EC Security, Beagle Watch and ADT.
According to co-ordinator and spokesperson Alison Pucci, this approach has been instrumental in identifying and addressing high-risk areas and reducing cable theft in the area.
“The Rangers raised funds with generous donations from local organisations such as the Frontline Church, where the first camera was placed to overlook the mini substations (MSS) as well as the cables,” Alison said.
In addition to patrols, the HRA has implemented various initiatives to secure numerous MSSs in neighbourhoods, including welding bars and securing them with City Power (CP) locks.
Security cameras have also been installed in hotspot areas, providing 24-hour visibility and enabling swift response to potential theft.
“This has already proven beneficial, whereby attempted cable theft was prevented by the monitor of a camera noticing a power fluctuation near a specific camera. Security companies and Power Rangers were notified, and their quick response prevented a massive cable from being stolen.
“The success of these efforts is evident, with CP sources confirming a reduction in cable theft. However, more needs to be done to ensure the community remains protected.
“Help us be the eyes that protect our streets from cable thieves,” Alison added.
The community is urged to support this lucrative initiative by donating funds for the purchase and installation of additional security cameras. All donations will be utilised solely for this purpose for a greater cause. Residents can contact Alison on 083 299 6510.
