Local newspaper takes second place at prestigious community awards
Their commitment and excellence to keeping communities informed are celebrated in style.
The Roodepoort Record and the Roodepoort Northsider were honoured at the annual AVBOB FCJ Excellence Awards, hosted by the Forum of Community Journalists (FCJ) on August 2.
The prestigious awards dinner took place at the Sandton Hotel.
The Record and Northsider were recognised for their outstanding contribution to community journalism as both were nominated in the Top 10 Free Newspaper of The Year category. The Northsider was also nominated in the Best Back Page category and took home the second place in the Free Newspaper of The Year category with the Record being a top 10 finalist.
“Our support for these awards stems from a shared purpose. We believe in the power of community. We are deeply rooted in the communities we serve, and we see community journalism as a vital source of information and empowerment,” CEO of AVBOB Carl van der Riet said in his address.
The FCJ Awards ceremony brought together journalists and media professionals from across the country. The event celebrated the vital role of community newspapers in promoting informed citizenship and encouraging community engagement.
