Honeydew police bid farewell to their captain

Honeydew Police Station hosted a fun sports day in honour of their captain's retirement.

The Ruimsig Stadium was abuzz as the Honeydew Police Station hosted a massive event on October 10, in honour of their captain, who is now retiring after serving his beloved community for 37 years.

The event saw various law enforcement agencies, including the JMPD for Region C, Gauteng police, and the Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department (TMPD), enjoy a lovely and active sports day.

The various law enforcement was divided into groups where they participated in numerous sporting codes such as netball, soccer for both men and women, volleyball, running, and aerobics. The Roodepoort Northsider spoke to the man of the hour, Captain Remi Motaung, who has been serving as the captain for the Honeydew Police Station proudly.

“I started working in Honeydew in 1968 as a security guard at the police station and during those times, the law did not favour black people, but I knew that I wanted to change that and make a difference in the community.

“Working an eight-hour shift as a security guard was not easy back in those days, as we would sometimes have to work overtime against our will because some employees would not show up for their night shift.

“My passion for law enforcement motivated me to attend the police academy and rise through the ranks, which is where I started as a constable, then later a sergeant. My work ethic and dedication to the badge led to me becoming an investigating officer, where I handled all the high-profile cases. This was both challenging and encouraging because I had the opportunity to save lives and serve my community.

“When I was appointed as captain, this was not an honour but an opportunity to lead and inspire the future captain, who will keep the Honeydew Police Station’s name in a positive light. This event was amazing, and I am so thankful to serve my community,” Motaung said.

As he embarks on his well-deserved retirement, his exceptional work ethic, strategic vision, and commitment to safety have significantly contributed to the station’s good reputation and success.
