Romano beats all odds
Davidsonville businessman Romano Mecuur thrives after a life-threatening car accident.
Romano Mecuur’s (35) story resembles perseverance and hope.
Born and bred in Davidsonville, Romano is a thriving businessman happily married with three kids.
But in 2009, his life took a devastating turn when he was involved in a tragic accident that claimed two lives and left him clinging for survival. The impact was so severe that he lost his memory and doctors condemned him to a life of dependence.
He was in ICU for two weeks, unable to breathe on his own, and was forced to wear diapers.
“When I woke up from the hospital, the first person I saw was my eldest daughter and I couldn’t remember who she was.
“This was the most confusing time of my life because I had to start from scratch, like a child and relearn everything,” recalls Romano.
“I was weak and at some point, doctors thought I was not going to make it. However, my spirit refused to surrender,”
Romano says he had to learn how everything works and relearn everyone around him.
His grandmother became his primary caregiver, nurturing him back to life. Slowly, his memory began to resurface, but the journey was hard.
“It took me months to fully understand what was going on and to regain my memory,” he says.
His older brother played a pivotal role in reintegrating Romano into society, taking him to church and encouraging social interactions.
Fast-forward to 2023, Romano was determined to rebuild his life. He discovered Synergistic Covenant Network, a nonprofit organisation, and began volunteering. Here, he found solace in gardening and working with his hands.
“My passion is working with hands and I believe that is where God gifted me.”
Romano’s passion ignited, and opportunities started to bloom. Synergistic partnered with the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) and they offered him with many others a short course in entrepreneurship to equip him with skills to turn his dream into a reality.
“The courses included skills like how to start your own business, and financial planning and they also funded my business with equipment. I’m grateful to Synergistic for allowing me to volunteer and the staff for always giving a helping a helping hand.”
Today, Romano proudly runs his own business in Davidsonville and has employed at least one person.
“I want to use my story to empower others that anything is possible. I want people to not use their problems as an excuse,” he concludes.
