Get tested: Free cancer screenings in Discovery
You can get a free cancer screening done this weekend.
Cansa West Rand is holding a free cancer screening event at the Discovery Recreation Centre this Friday and Saturday (November 8 and 9).
According to Cansa West Rand service support office manager Isabel Gomes, early detection of cancer is crucial in ensuring the most effective treatment of the disease.
“It’s a terrible disease that can spread rapidly,” she adds. “The sooner we can catch it, the more effective the treatments, and the better the chance of beating it.
“While the event is open to anyone in the community, we are pushing for our unsung community heroes to come in for screenings,” she says.
“We implore everyone from police officers to security personnel, patrollers, firefighters, paramedics and EMS personnel to come through for screening.
“They are the people that respond when we as the community need them, and I think it is high time we pay it forward and start looking after them as well.”
Gomes and service sister Monica Grovè are well-known within the community for their tireless efforts to assist cancer sufferers. Throughout the West Rand, they have become known as a formidable duo for whom no effort is too much when it comes to service to their patients.
Their work in creating awareness about cancer and early diagnosis reaches far and wide through their numerous free workplace screenings and other activities.
“We will be conducting prostate blood tests for men, breast examinations for both men and women, as well as skin analysis on the day.
“We invite everyone to come along and get screened. It is better to be safe than sorry,” Gomes concludes.
The recreation centre is situated at the corner of Struben Avenue and Anstruther Street. The event will run from 09:00 to 15:00 on both days. For more information, call Gomes on 065 475 2639.
