Honoring Dave Rankin’s legacy

As the community mourns, friends and colleagues remember the man who was not only a mentor but a gentleman.

It is with heavy hearts that the community mourns the passing of Dave (David) Rankin, who according to many, was a man of unwavering integrity and dedication.

Dave’s contributions to community safety and his genuine compassion for those around him have left an indelible mark, especially on the communities in which he worked.

Dave was a foundational figure in community safety initiatives, first through his involvement with the Roodepoort Community Policing Forum (CPF), which he helped establish. His commitment to public service continued as he joined the Honeydew CPF, where he played a pivotal role in starting the patrol programme.

Jon Rosenberg, the chairperson of the Honeydew CPF, expressed his condolences to Rankin’s family and friends, describing him as ‘a true gentleman, and a man of high integrity who will be sorely missed’.

Rosenberg recalled his early encounters with Rankin through the Honeydew CPF, and how they grew closer through their work in the patrol programme. Working side by side, Rosenberg learned a great deal from Rankin.

“He was an incredible mentor with so much experience and knowledge. He loved patrolling and serving his community,” Rosenberg reflected. “After he packed it in due to ailing health, we still met for a coffee or a light lunch, and I’m going to miss those times.”

Rankin was known not only for his experience but also for his unwavering principles.

“He was a man of great morals and ethics, and there were no grey areas with Dave,” Rosenberg noted.

Rankin’s dedication to the community and his commitment to high standards served as an example to all who knew him. As the family and friends remember him, they carry forward his legacy of service, strength and integrity.
