Bikers spread light to the less fortunate

Various local motorcycle clubs took part in this year's National Diwali Run.

In 2019, a group of motorcycle clubs in South Africa decided to make a difference by founding the National Diwali Run (NDR).

They aimed to spread the spirit of Diwali – celebrated for its message of love, light, and prosperity – to people from all walks of life in disadvantaged communities.

Formed by various biker clubs in Johannesburg, Durban and Port Elizabeth, these groups united with a mission: To make Diwali a time of giving and inclusion for everyone, regardless of faith or background. From temples to churches and old age homes, their work has brought hope to thousands.

The West Rand distribution was led by Family that Rides Social Motorcycle Club (FTR SMC) and Padres MCC, assisted by Ironclad Africa.

The St Gabriel’s Anglican Church in Florida received hampers of much-needed essential grocery items.

According to National Diwali Run’s public relations officer for Johannesburg, Riana Burges, the day started gloomy as the rain came down, and the bikers were not able to create excitement by roaring bikes from afar.

“But nothing was going to stop them from their mission to give back to the community.

Members from biker clubs offload grocery hampers at one of their destinations.

“Determined, the bikers managed to make all the stops on their schedules, handing out a record number of hampers filled to the brim with various essentials to various organisations throughout the West Rand, from Sophiatown to Krugersdorp.”

Bikers handed out grocery hampers at Christ the King Anglican Church in Sophiatown, a women’s shelter in Discovery, St Gabriel’s Anglican Church, the KCCC Foundation and Dorcas Aid in Florida.

They also handed out hampers to individual members of the public at the Krugersdorp Police Station.
