Free cancer screening a resounding success

A total of 426 screenings were done in two days by Cansa West Rand.

The recent cancer screening event hosted by Cansa West Rand was a resounding success, with an impressive 426 community members screened in two days.

Isabel Gomes, the service support office manager at Cansa West Rand, was thrilled with the turnout.

“The event was fantastic, and we’re grateful for the community’s enthusiastic response,” she said. “It means a lot to us because awareness is what we are trying to do. We must prioritise early detection, as it significantly improves treatment outcomes.”

The screenings were held at Discovery Recreation Centre, and it offered blood tests for prostate cancer in men, breast examinations for both men and women and skin analysis.

This event was open to anyone in the community, but they also pushed for the unsung heroes in the community, like police officers, security personnel, paramedics, and emergency services responders.

“The individuals selflessly serve our community, and we wanted to give back to them to ensure their health and well-being.

“We are going to continue having these kinds of events and screenings throughout South Africa, and we do have some booked for January and February next year already,” she says.

The event also received a heartwarming donation of hair for cancer patients, bringing hope and joy to those undergoing treatment.

“We collect donations from all people who cut their hair. It needs to be 30cm long, and it is taken to Cape Town, where they make wigs from real hair for our cancer patients for a certain amount.

“We also gave out pink towels to women. It has a tag and a QR code to guide women on how to do breast cancer examinations for themselves,” she concludes.
