Florida Clinic opens maternity unit

Assessment work is currently underway to turn Florida Clinic into a 24-hour service facility.

December 1 marked a momentous occasion at Florida Clinic, as it officially opened its doors to its brand new maternity obstetric unit (MOU). It has been a wonderful start with five precious newborns delivered in just a few days.

According to Sister Lebogang Moeketsi, the MOU facility manager, the decision to introduce this service stems from the growing need for accessibility and high-quality maternal care in the community.

The services that are offered include antenatal care, labour and delivery support, postnatal care, and health education for mothers on how to take care of their babies. They also attend to normal delivery cases without complications, and pregnancies with complications are referred and attended to at Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital.

“The kind of staffing we have for the community includes midwives, administration staff and cleaners. The facility is equipped with delivery beds, an infant warmer, an incubator, and other essential medical supplies,” Moeketsi says.

“The maternity unit marks a significant step in the broader plan to transform Florida Clinic into a community health centre that offers 24-hour maternity, accident and emergency care. In the future patients can expect additional services such as 24/7 emergency care and radiology services.”

Moeketsi says work is currently underway to assess operational readiness for the 24-hour services, and once that is completed, they anticipate that the clinic will officially offer these services in the coming months.
