MRA start vegetable garden

Maraisburg Resident Association started a vegetable garden at the Railway parking on 6th Street, aimed at uniting the community.

The Maraisburg Residents Association (MRA) has started a vegetable garden aimed at fostering and uniting the community. According to Cecil Loots, a member of the MRA committee, they have already flattened the land and prepared seeds for plating.

The garden will yield a variety of vegetables, including potatoes, chillies, pumpkins, cauliflower, and more. But the harvest will not be for personal gain; instead, the produce will be given back to the community.

“We’re hoping to unite the community by working for the community,” Loots explained. “Once everything is ready, we’ll give back to those in need. This is our small beginning, and we’re excited to see it grow.”

This project’s objective extends beyond providing fresh produce. It seeks to bring residents together, encouraging collaborative efforts and social cohesion.

While progress has been made, Cecil says the association still requires support with essentials like irrigation systems, netting, and additional seeds.

“This is our small beginning, and every contribution, no matter how small, will help us nurture this project and reap its rewards – not just in terms of vegetables, but building a stronger and more united community,” he adds.

The MRA was formed in August of this year, and they aim to tackle pressing issues in the community such as crime and service delivery, just to name a few.

“We have now registered as a non-profit organisation and we have new members that have joined us,” Loots says.

Residents of Maraisburg who wish to be part of MRA can contact Fayroza Wadvalla on 084 743 7090 or Cecil on 067 067 0696.
