Community mourns a hero
The life of well-known former SPCA inspector Eric Taljaard was tragically cut short after a heart attack.
Widely loved and highly respected former SPCA senior inspector Eric Taljaard, passed away suddenly from a heart attack on November 28 at the age of 58.
Eric regularly featured in the Roodepoort Record and was a stalwart inspector at the Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA until a tragic accident in October 2022 resulted in the end of his career.
Eric’s accident occurred when a fire broke out at the Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA and he scaled a roof of one of the buildings in an attempt to fight the raging fire and rescue the animals he so loved and had worked tirelessly his whole life to protect.
Enveloped in darkness and smoke, he fell, fracturing his back in multiple places.
According to wife Teresa, Eric’s life story is one of unwavering dedication, compassion, and sacrifice.
“The loss of his physical strength and the ability to continue his work devastated him,” she says.
“Eric devoted himself to the well-being of animals from an early age, joining the Lower South Coast SPCA in 1998, and later transferring to the Roodepoort SPCA in 2012.
“His greatest goal was always clear: To make a positive impact in the lives of animals, ensuring their welfare and safety. Whether it was rescuing animals in distress or preventing disasters, Eric always went above and beyond.”
Eric was not just an animal advocate; he was a loving and devoted family man.
“He was deeply cherished, and we stood by each other through thick and thin as we faced every challenge together,” says Teresa. “Our four children, Werner, Angelique, Tiaan and Ilze, and his grandchildren – especially twin boys Wian and Waldo – are struggling to comprehend the loss of their ‘oupa’, but they, along with the other grandchildren, will carry the memory of his love and kindness in their hearts forever.”
Eric’s legacy lives on, not only in the animals he rescued and cared for but also in the family members he inspired. His son, Werner, has chosen to follow in his father’s footsteps, now working at The Cape of Goodhope SPCA, and continuing the mission that Eric lived for.
Krugersdorp/ Roodepoort SPCA manager and years-long confidante of Eric, Mandy Cattanach says, “The SPCA, animals, and all who knew Eric mourn his untimely passing, but his influence will never fade, as he will always be remembered for the extraordinary difference he made in the lives of both animals and people.”
Eric will be laid to rest during a private ceremony, and his family has asked for time and privacy to mourn the passing of their beloved husband, father and grandfather in peace.
