Florida Lake swimming pool now open

The community is invited to join in on water safety lessons and other water activities this Friday, December 13.

The Florida Lake Swimming Pool has finally opened to the public again.

To celebrate this occasion, they are inviting the greater community to join them for a day of festivities and water safety lessons on Friday, December 13.

According to pool superintendent Gcina Mchunu, they are calling on children between the ages of five and 12 for water safety lessons and water-based games such as water polo. Additionally, children between 12 and 15 years old, as well as adults who can swim, will receive training in the necessary skills to become lifeguards.

“This event aims to teach the community at large about swimming so that we can prevent drowning challenges. This day is not only limited to children; we are also calling on adults who cannot swim and those who are affected by substance abuse to join us on this day,” says Gcina.

The pool was closed during the last swimming season after it received a budget of R1.8m for maintenance, which included building work, electrical pool work and plumbing.

The City of Johannesburg spokesperson Nthatisi Modingoane explained to the Roodepoort Record that the pool was closed again at the end of January after they discovered red sand coming from the bottom draw pipe while addressing a valve issue, and it became apparent during a routine check before the valve could be repaired.

He says this issue couldn’t have been fixed earlier because the issue with the bottom draw pipe was unforeseen, and the contractors were still in the process of providing a quote for the valve repair, which delayed the start of the actual repair work.

However, with the repairs now complete, including the motor installation, the pool is ready to welcome back the community.

“My appeal to all is to please make use of the Florida Lake Swimming Pool responsibly; let’s take care of our facility and make sure that everyone can enjoy themselves responsibly,” says Ward 70 Clr Caleb Finn.

“Work is still underway to try to get the Florida North swimming pool functional as well; further updates will be provided as soon as we know what is happening,” says Finn.

Entrance fees are as follows:

• Adult (18 years and older): R20
• Child (four to 17 years old): R6
• Pensioners (63 years and older): R 10
• Persons living with disabilities: Children; R3 and adults; R10
