Share in the Oliviers’ Christmas spirit
Residents are invited to join in a spectacular Christmas light show and carols on December 16.
For the past five years, Sharon Olivier and her husband Sean, have been working hard to decorate their house for the Christmas season.
From December 1, their house at 6 Bradfield Street, Horizon View, is adorned with Christmas decorations of every conceivable sort, lighting up their street and the whole mood of the neighbourhood.
“We started during Covid,” says Sharon, who adds that ‘the bug’ as she calls it, resulted in a dreary time with people losing their jobs and struggling to make ends meet.
“I think everyone was living in fear of catching the dreaded disease, which just added to the severe negativity that prevailed at the time.
“We wanted to do something to spread some cheer, and the only way we could think of doing this within our means was to start decorating our house with Christmas lights that I have been collecting over the years.”
Sean jokes that his only real involvement in this initiative is footing the bill for his wife’s passion.
This had a massive impact and people have since started coming from far and wide to look at the beautiful lights, which are switched on daily from 19:00 to 21:00, weather permitting.
“Two years ago, we decided to spice things up a little,” says Sharon. “We put a sound system outside and started playing Christmas carols as well.
“Our annual Christmas light and music show has since grown even bigger, attracting even more people. Our neighbours on both sides now also sport Christmas lights on their roofs and their boundary fences, making for a proper spectacle.”
This year, the Oliviers have decided to take things even further.
“We always start playing music from December 16, and this year, the Horison Baptist Church has offered to have their church band play on the opening night.
“We’ve also arranged with a local security company, who will ensure that there is safe parking and passage available for people who want to visit on the night.”
The event is open to anyone, and is free of charge, although donations are welcome.
“Any proceeds will be given to the Horison Baptist Church, which in its turn, will ensure that it goes to a worthwhile charity.”
