Festive season safety alert: How to report crime and stay protected
Steps and guidelines on how to report crime this festive season.
South Africans are urged to remain vigilant and report any criminal activities this festive season. While this time of year is meant for celebration and joy, it also presents opportunities for criminals to strike.
According to Florida police’s Lieutenant Colonel Sipho Dlamini, families need to put safety first this festive season.
“We encourage families that will be travelling to not leave the house unattended and to ensure that their security alarms are working properly. Do not leave children unattended, have panic buttons nearby, avoid travelling at night, and drinking and driving,” says Dlamini.
To ensure safety and security, it is critical to know how to report crime effectively.
According to the South African Police Services website, here’s what you need to know:
Reporting crime: A step-by-step guide
• To report an emergency, dial 10111
• If you know of any criminal activities or want to report a crime anonymously, you can contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111
• Visit your nearest police station to report the crime
• Locate the physical address of the police station closest to you
What to expect when reporting a crime:
• Police officials will attend the crime scene, take statements from you and witnesses (if possible), and register the case in the SAPS Crime Administration System (CAS)
• You will receive a CAS number via SMS or phone call, which serves as a reference for future inquiries
• If you visit a local police station to report a crime, a police official will interview you, take a statement, and register the reported crime in the CAS
• You will receive a CAS number for all inquiries regarding the reported case
The investigation process:
• The reported docket will then be allocated to a detective for investigation, who will be in touch with you and keep you updated on progress
• If the matter is taken into court, the detective will be in touch with you
This holiday season, keep yourself safe by paying attention to your surroundings and reporting any suspicious activity.
